How a Portuguese postal code works

A postal code in Portugal has the format CP4-CP3: four digits, a hyphen and three digits — for example, 1000-001.

CP4 — 1000

The first four digits (CP4) identify a geographic area — a locality or part of a municipality.

CP3 — 001

The final three digits (CP3) pinpoint the address, which may be a street, a section or a specific recipient.

Frequently asked questions

What's the difference between a postal code and a zip code in Portugal?
They're the same thing — Portugal uses "código postal", commonly translated as "postal code" or "zip code" in English, in the CP4-CP3 format (e.g. 1000-001).
How can I find an address from a Portuguese postal code?
Search the full code (CP4-CP3) and the result page shows the locality, the street and door references in the CTT records, and its location on the map.
What format do Portuguese postal codes use?
Four digits, a hyphen, then three digits — for example 1000-001. The first four digits identify an area; the last three pinpoint a street or address.
What is a postal designation?
It is the official place name that accompanies the seven-digit postal code. CTT says to write it in uppercase after the code on the final line of a domestic address.
